The Georg Agricola University of Applied Sciences for Raw Materials, Energy and the Environment in Bochum (TFH) has a long, rich history: It began as the Bochum Mining School (circa 1816), which taught the fundamentals of engineering to upper-level managers in the mining industry. After the Fachhochschulen system (universities of applied sciences) was created, the Mining School became a private University of Applied Sciences for Mining in 1971. Most of the students majored in mining, mechanical, process and electrical engineering. Today's students still receive in-depth training in these fields. However, after consulting with industry players, the Georg Agricola university decided to expand its curriculum in order to provide forward-looking, application-oriented training for the engineers of tomorrow. Today, students can choose from a diverse range of engineering programs.
The University of Applied Sciences received its current name in 1995. It is a state-accredited private university run by DMT Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung mbH.
To document the quality of its education in 1999, the TFH called in outside experts to certify its operations in accordance with DIN ISO 9001. That makes it one of only a handful of Germany universities to have all its activities audited in full.
